SkinPen microneedling is a treatment proven to improve the appearance of acne scars and other skin flaws, and appropriate for all skin types. It involves the creation of micro-injuries to the skin, at varying depths, that trigger the natural regeneration of collagen to improve skin quality.
Skin problems? Check out SkinPen.
Skin concerns can run the gamut from dealing with residual acne scarring from the teen years to treating the signs of aging skin. Fortunately, you don’t have to turn to surgery to address many of these issues. Nonsurgical treatments have evolved into efficient, practical solutions for a wide range of skin problems.
Microneedling is one of those versatile procedures that work with the natural processes of your body to regenerate and rejuvenate the skin. The treatment offers improvement for an array of skin concerns, creating a smoother, more vibrant complexion in the process.
Microneedling at its best – SkinPen.
Our doctors and staff at CIARAVINO Total Beauty are excited to offer the latest in microneedling technology, the SkinPen. This pen-sized device packs a powerful punch with every pass on the skin, creating microchannels that stimulate the skin’s rejuvenation process at a cellular level.
Skin rejuvenation from within – restore the glow!
As the only FDA-approved microneedling device for treating acne scars, the SkinPen has also proven highly effective as a treatment to ward off the early signs of aging. Whether it is used as a standalone procedure or in combination with other treatments, the SkinPen offers dramatic results that can last for many months without the need for anesthesia, incisions or recovery time.
How does microneedling work?
Collagen induction therapy (CIT), another term for microneedling, is a treatment that stimulates the body’s own healing mechanisms to restore health and beauty to the skin. The noninvasive procedure creates microchannels in the skin that trigger a three-step wound repair process:
- Inflammation: During this first phase, the immune system works to clean out the tiny wounds and increase blood flow to the area for the generation of new tissue.
- Proliferation: The second phase of the repair process brings in new cells as well as an increase of collagen and elastin. These essential proteins work in the cellular matrix of the dermis to provide support and produce a supple, youthful skin surface.
- Remodeling: As the last phase of the repair process kicks in, new tissue and blood vessels have been created in the area. Original collagen has been replaced with a stronger collagen formation that firms and tightens the skin.
Because this process takes some time, enhancements tend to occur gradually and last for many months for most of our patients.
FDA-approved, and that’s just the beginning.
While there are a variety of microneedling devices in use today, the SkinPen is the only one that is approved by the FDA. The agency cleared the SkinPen for use in patients age 22 and over to treat facial acne scars.
It has also been proven effective in treating the early signs of aging skin and can be used with topical serums to enhance these results further. The procedure works on all skin types and tones, making this an appropriate treatment for nearly every patient looking for effective skin rejuvenation at CIARAVINO Total Beauty.

The SkinPen microneedling treatment is commonly used on the skin of the face but can also be used to treat the neck and décolleté, backs of the hands and thighs. In addition to the benefits as listed, the treatment can also be used to reduce the appearance of cellulite. Because the depth of the needles can be easily adjusted, the process works equally well on thicker areas of skin like the midface and delicate areas around the eyes and mouth.
Comfortable? Mostly. Effective? Very.
A treatment session using the SkinPen microneedling device is relatively comfortable, thanks to the application of topical numbing cream before the procedure. Once the area is numb, the pen is moved across the treatment area, delivering the fine needles at the prescribed depth based on the amount of correction you need. Most sessions only last about 30 minutes once the numbing cream has taken effect. However, larger or multiple treatment areas could take longer.
After microneedling – will I look normal?
You will be able to resume your routine as soon as your procedure is over if you like. It is normal to experience reddened skin after microneedling, and many feel more comfortable remaining at home for the rest of the day due to this visible side effect.
Soreness after the procedure is minimal, similar to a sunburn, and should not keep you from performing any tasks you like.
The redness should subside considerably by the second day, with a generalized pinkness to the skin that can usually be covered up with makeup. It is critical to protect your skin from UV rays while it is healing since it will be more vulnerable to burning than usual.
Your skin will thank you!
Serums our aestheticians can apply include bottled growth factors explicitly designed for microneedling treatments to help you gain a more youthful and even glow. There are a variety of serums to choose from, based on your precise skin needs, from hydrating formulations to those used to treat acne or aging symptoms.
Will I see results from microneedling right away?
You will see positive results following your very first SkinPen microneedling procedure, once the redness subsides. Your skin should feel much smoother and sport a healthy glow. In the weeks following, you will see an improvement in your skin’s texture and tone, with a visible reduction in fine lines and scarring. To achieve the most dramatic results, we recommend three treatment sessions, spaced 30 days apart.
Some patients may require one to three additional appointments to meet their aesthetic goals, particularly those that want to reduce acne scarring significantly. Once you complete your final session, your refreshed, rejuvenated appearance should last around six months before a touch-up treatment will be needed to maintain refreshed, revitalized skin.
